Message: - It seems you are very helpful. I have a Gunnar Erichson born 6-1-1774 . His father is Erich Tindeland. He is married to Sara Halvardsdtr b. 12-9-1780 d 10-19-1823. I have her ancestry. I am working on Gunnar’s. I wanted his death date and his ancestors. I have looked at the parish records but am not able to decipher further. The bygdebok is located about 400 or 1600 km away. Their daughter married Steiner Paulson Fagerland who came to USA.

Kathy Hall

SS kommentar: According to the census from Fjelberg parish in 1801, there was a man called Gunder Erichson (born 1774), that was living on the farm Tindeland. His wife was Sara. This is my great great grandfather. All information fits on him.

Dear Steinar, You were helpful in sending me a photo of the farm where my Grandfather was born. Stueland Farm in Vikebygd.
My email box lost the photo. I made another request and you resent it, but I never received it.
Now my two sons are stationed in the US military in Germany. One is in Ramstein. He is in the Air Force. The other will be there in June stationed at Vilsick. They would like to go there and visit the farm. My son asked me to send him an attachment of the photo. Would you please send it to me one more time. I am sorry for the trouble. You were very kind to help me before and I would very much appreciate you help again. I now know how to save the photo and will not lose it again. Thank You for your help. I am trying to help a friend with her genealogy. The obituary dated July 1940, Boone County, Nebraska, USA says:

INGER MARIE LOVAAS was born April 7, 1868 in SVEEN PRESTEGJELD near HAUGESUND, Norway. She was the daughter of Lars and Astrid Lovaas and she came to tyhis country with her parents in June 1893. Inger had four brothers who were living in 1940: John, Andrew, Bernhard, and Halvor Lovaas. The familly now spells their name Levos.

Is SVEEN a church or parish near where your family came from? I can't seem to find the name Lovaas/Lovas/Levos anywhere.

Thanks for any answer or guidance.

Sincerely,
Sonia Gregerson Meyer, Hacienda Heights, California (a suburb of Los Angeles),

My husband and I are planning a trip to Norway the latter part of June and was wondering if you knew of any family members who we could possibly meet, however, we know no Norwegian.  We will be in Vikebygd on Saturday, June 28th.  We would like to try and find the homestead and the cemetary and learn more about my ancestors.  If you can help me with this, I would very much appreciate it.

SS Comment: Well. With good help from "Digitalarkivet" (the "Digital Archive" on Internet) and local people, her relatives in Vikebygd were traced. The farm is Leirhammer and the Bjørnevik family is a part of her family.

Endre
Amundsen Dommersnæss (b.1826/1829) lived with his wife Brita Ellingsdatter (b.1838) on the farm Leirhammer in year 1900.
Their children were:  Amund b. 1856 (=Omen);  Erling Johan b. 1861; Aselina b. 1870; Gurina b. 1875; Svend b. 1877  (Last name: Endresen Dommernes).
------------------
In 1962 Endre Dommersnes (b.1907) lived on this farm together with his wife Bertha Sørvåg.  Endre was the son of Asseline Dommersnes and Anfin Svendsbø.  This is probably Aselina (b. 1870).
In the book: "Norske Gardsbruk" it is written that Asseline D. baught the farm from Halvord Svendsen in 1896. Her son Endre took over the farm in 1956.

Omen Enderson Dommersness
had 12-13 children. His eldest daughter, Isabella, lived until she was 109 years old.
Her son, Orwel Madson, is the father of Linda Reed.

Message: God dag from Pennsylvania, USA!

My mother's family came from the farm Kike (Kjeka) in the parish of Fjelberg, but it had a connection from the Tindeland farm. Her ancestor, Gjert Hansen (1829-1902), son of Hans Jørgensen, had to leave the farm to look for work because he was not the oldest son. At the Qvamme farm, he met and married Petrine Torsteinsdatter Iversøy (1829-1891), from the parish of Stord, in 1855. She was the widow of Gunder Gundersen Tindeland (ca 1821-1854), the son of Gunder Eriksen Tindeland. With him, she had three children, Gunder (1850-1930), Ingeborg (born 1852) and Gunvor Serine (1854-1930). In 1859, the family, including the children, went to Canada and lived with the other Norwegians in Quebec until 1865, when the American Civil War was over. They then moved to the USA and took Hanson as their surname. They lived on a farm north of Viroqua in Wisconsin for 13 years, from 1865 to 1878. In 1878, they moved for the last time - to a farm east of Flandreau in Dakota Territory (now South Dakota). That was where Gjert and Petrine died. Together they had seven children, and their second son was my great grandfather, Tonnes "Tom" Hanson (1865-1956).

My mother remembers that her grandfather had a picture of his parents on the wall of his living room but she does not know who now has that picture. I do not know exactly how I am related to you because I have never seen those books about the farms of Kvinnherad and Ølen. But if you do know, please tell me! My mother and I would like very much to know!

SS Comment: It looks like there will be several ancestor lines in Vikebygd and the local area.  We keep looking.

Message: I AM GERMAN DECENT FROM MY FATHERS FAMILY. MY MOTHERS NAME IS ALICE MAE STUELAND. MY GRANDFATHER CAME TO AMERICA FROM VIKEBYGD. THEIR FARM I THINK IS NAMED STUELAND ALSO. MY GAGRANDFATHERS NAME WAS HALVER GUSTAV MIKKELSEN STUELAND. HIS FATHER WAS MIKKEL HAKTORSEN AND HIS FATHER WAS HAKTOR MIKKELSEN. I AM NOT SURE IF I HAVE THE SPELLING EXACTLY RIGHT IN NORWEGIAN. MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER WAS NAMED GURO REGENOS RIERSDATR. MY MOTHER LIVED IN CALAMUS IOWA AS A GIRL. HER FATHER CAME TO AMERICA ON A SHIP FROM NORWAY. SHE HAD AN AUNT TILLY STUELAND WHO LIVED IN CALAMUS. THERE IS A LARGE CAR DEALER THERE TODAY WHO IS RELATED. I HAVE COUSINS LIVING IN CALAMUS. I WAS BORN IN MUSCATINE IOWA ABOUT 50 MILES AWAY. I WROTE TO AND SPOKE ON THE PHONE TO SOME OF MY GRANDFATHERS FAMILY LIVING IN VIKEBYGD. THIS WAS A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO. THE OLDER PEOPLE COULD NOT SPEAK ENGLISH BUT THERE WAS A YOUNGER PERSON I SPOKE TO WHO COULD SPEAK ENGLISH. THEY INVITED ME TO COME VISIT THEM. THEY SAID WE COULD STAY WITH THEM. MY MOTHER WENT TO VISIT THEM BEFORE SHE DIED. SHE SENT THEM A LETTER TO MEET HER AT THE PORT IN HAUGESUND. THE LETTER WAS RETURNED WITH. SHE HAD THE WRONG ADDRESS. SHE WAS SAD SHE MISSED THEM. SHE LOVED HER NORWAY HERITAGE. SHE ATTENDED A NORWEGIAN SCHOOL AND LEARNED TO SPEAK THE LANGUAGE AS A GIRL. SHE LOST MOST OF THE ABILITY TO SPEAK THE LANGUAGE OVER THE YEARS. I AM ALSO PROUD OF MY NORWEGIAN HERITAGE AND HOPE TO COME VISIT SOME DAY. WE JUST RETURNED FROM GERMANY LAST WEEK FOR MY SON'S WEDDING. WE HOPE TO GO TO NORWAY NEXT TIME. I AM INTERESTED IN GENEOLOGY. I WONDER IF YOU KNOW ANYONE NAMED STUELAND? PLEASE SEND ME AN EMAIL. THE PHOTOS OF VIKEBYGD IN YOUR WEBBSITE ARE WONDERFUL. JOHN KIEL

SS Comment: Thank you for writing in my guestbook.  I think we managed to find the right farm from where your ancestors came.  Keep in touch.

Message: I just found your webpage as I was searching for my ancestors. I'm Australian but my great grandfather Klaus Bertin Klausen Smordal came from Bergin. He was born in 1882 in Smordal farm Myking and christened in Sandvikskirken. His mother, Anna Jorgensdatter was christened in Fjelberg parish. She was born Anne Jorgensdatter Forde in 1854 in Vikebygd subparish and I'm trying to determine which church exactly it was and I believe she married Berge Klausen from Smordal farm, Myking at the church in Sveio or Fjelberg or Vikebygd. This is what brings me to your webpage as I'm trying to isolate the most probable location of their marriage prior to contacting the church to see the records myself. I'm coming to Norway with my norwegian boyfriend in Feb 2004 (that's very soon now) and I will continue my search while I'm living there and learning norwegian. I will be living in Sandnes so I hope to talk to you later. I welcome emails from anyone if you have any information that can help on my search. I'm really keen to contact distant relations living in Norway and beyond....

SS Comment: Thank you for writing in my guestbook.  It was nice helping you to find your roots and to meet you as we are related to each other.

Message: Hello, I am writing this on behalf of my husband, Roger. I came across your web page and found familiar names. We are related to Per Skartland and his daughter, "Karen" and in fact have pictures of Per from about 1900 or so, and a wedding picture of Karen and her husband (early 1900's). Just thought it would be fun to let you know. Regards, Peg Gravrok.

SS Comment: Thank you for writing in my guestbook - and for all contact. Per Skartland lived on the farm next to us.  Nice to have a visit from your relatives from us several times.

Sorry, I don't know Norwegian. My grandfather, Pedar Alne came to the US and farmed near Bricelyn, Minnesota. I believe his sister married a Gehart Skartland from Frost Minnesota. About half of my grandfather's siblings remain in Norway. I occasionally hear from a 2nd cousin, Inger Alne. A wonderful site you have!

SS Comment: I know Inger, her brother Bjarne and many other people in this family.  Information is passed on to them.
